BETTER CROWD AND MORE RECORDING SOON

This past Friday, Mary’s Basement played at one of our “famous” spots, Allendale Bar & Grill. Even though the supposed hurricane made the room look empty, it filled up rather quickly and things were moving from there. The set list was re-arranged to be less “artsy” and it was a smart move, as the crowd were dancing up a storm (no pun intended). Definitely a far cry from when we played the week before at the hockey fundraiser…I was waiting for a funeral to break out that night.

Not every gig is a hit out of the park…or a puck in the goal? Work with me here!

KEEP PUSHIN’

I hope to go back into the studio to lay down the bass tracks for my new album soon. Last time I was there, I started feeling fatigued too quickly. I’m no spring chicken anymore, not able to bang out a full album in a day like I used to. While I agree that art simply cannot and should not be rushed, I am so antsy to get this new album out for various reasons.

I keep pushin’ through, no matter what it takes.

BACK UNDER THE COVERS

The last time I got together with Mary’s Basement was back in July for a 4th of July bash (on July 3rd!) and was supposed to play a gig with them at the Ramsey pool but had another gig offer for my band. Last night MB had a full rehearsal and for almost three hours, we burned through most of the set list for the two upcoming shows in town.

I’m back under the covers for a bit! Read more

NEW ENDORSEMENT AND RECORDING (PART TWO)

I have now become an endorser for Swiss Picks as of this afternoon! I tried their picks recently, put them through their paces as I do with any new piece of gear. The true test was live, and what better place than on stage with Nik West last Sunday?

They passed the test!

ONE SONG BECOMES TWO

Last night was the jam at Club Bonafide with the one and only Nik West and her amazing band. Even if I didn’t play on stage with her, I would still say that it was a very intense show, totally full of grooves, funk, dynamics, and star power.

But I played anyway 🙂 Read more

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES

Leave it to me to not be satisfied with the songs. Don’t worry, the seven tracks that I laid down in the studio last week are solid, but the two remaining tracks just got a makeover.

There’s a reason why those two songs didn’t make the cut right away! Read more

DAY ONE OF RECORDING…

Yesterday morning, I began tracking the new music for what will be my sixth album. It is also the first album that I am doing all the music myself and the first album since ALL WIRED UP that it will be an album by Steve Bello (no “band”).

Have to be honest, it’s very liberating.

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW…BUT MORE NEW COMING SOON!

Last night I had a brainstorm, or maybe it was a small drizzle. In preparation for the new album that I will finally get to record this Friday, why not post songs from past albums and bring people up to speed. Granted, my musical “history” is not one to brag about per se but I have amassed a bit of a catalog over the past 12 years.

Not bad for thinking I would be one and done back in 2003?

IF THE PLANETS ALIGN…

Yes I do study a bit of astronomy and astrology though I don’t let the latter define me. Sometimes things happen purely by chance, other times I have to go out and find what I am after.

But two things are happening very soon…

ALMOST THERE…

Last Saturday, I traded in one of my guitars to get a 5-string bass, as I didn’t feel like asking to borrow one from someone. I don’t think Billy Sheehan is going to lose sleep over me but I am a competent-enough bass player to play on my new album.

After all, I wrote the songs!
